Librarian at one of Earth's last paper libraries, Phoebe Addison is about to have a romantic and interplanetary adventure wilder than anything she's ever read.
OUT OF THE STACKS
Librarian Phoebe Addison has lived her entire life within a seventy-five mile radius of her small Louisiana town, but when she receives a strange medallion from her adventurous, off-world sister, reality tilts toward the bizarre. Everything Phoe thought she knew is…well, wrong. Dead wrong. But bone-numbing fear has no place in this brave new world—nor by the side of the dangerous, exquisite man who saves her life.
…AND INTO THE FIRE
Following the tragic slaughter of his family, operative Macijah “Cage” St. John understands evil in a way no man ever should. He traded happiness for a magnificent and terrible power, and fate isn’t done with him yet. He wasn’t looking for comfort. He didn’t need tenderness. But today he’ll play hero to a damsel in distress, and his quest will deliver him to the uncanny Martian colony of New London—and his heart to the demure Phoebe Addison. The bookish beauty’s hidden talents and deep abiding love just might save Cage from himself.
Phoebe could tell he wanted to say more but wouldn’t. She held his gaze, but he looked away, as if he were hiding a weakness he couldn’t stand for her to see.
“What are you talking about?” she said. “Help me understand.”
“I can’t,” he said, pulling back and shaking his head as if to clear it. “I won’t.”
“But why?”
He rolled back on his heels and stood quickly, and in an uncharacteristically clumsy movement, his shoulder brushed against the bedside table and nearly toppled the glass of tea.
“Just leave it alone, Phoe. My demons are my own.” The weakness was gone, and now that hard-edged, barely contained anger had returned.
She knew if she pressed him he would lash out. She was starting to understand, to be able to read his moods that had seemed so random and mysterious when they’d first met. There was a scab, healed over, but beneath the surface it still burned in his soul.
“Rest up,” he said, turning to walk away. “We’ll leave at sunset. Sadie has a car.”
Swallowing her nausea, Phoe threw back the blanket and stumbled out of the bed toward him. “Wait. Cage.”
He stopped but didn’t turn. “Look, I don’t know what’s happened in your past, but we all have demons. Some of us more than most. I get it.” She laid a hand on his shoulder, feeling the quiver of muscles pulled tight. The sensation of gentle touch had evidently become foreign. His head turned, staring down at where her fingertips rested against him. Such a profile, his eyes gazing downward and the faint glisten of a single tear resting just under his eyelashes. “You can trust me.”
“I do trust you, Phoe.”
She slid her arm along his shoulder, and he turned, enveloping her in a gentle embrace. He brushed a hand over her brow, smoothing back the stray locks that fell around her face. Being so close to him, she felt small and skittish. If he loosened his grasp even a little, she feared she would retreat.
He took her hand, bringing it to his lips then pressing her palm against his cheek. Instantly his body relaxed, as if her touch were some sort of calming drug. Phoebe could actually feel the tension melting from his muscles.
His eyes were full of fire and his breathing labored. Phoe couldn’t believe that it was her doing this to him. That all of this was for her.
“I don’t trust me,” he muttered in a low growl.
She was mesmerized by the curves of his lips as he spoke, and without even realizing, she’d moved closer. Only a breath between them, and then their lips touched.
At first he kissed her lightly, but when her tongue slid across the seam of his lips, he became insistent. His sumptuous mouth caressed her lower lip and it made her bold. Instinct kicked in and she kissed him back with equal intensity. Cage stole her breath and then offered his own. His arms tightened around her waist as he pulled her in against him, his hands rested on her hips as their kiss deepened.

The only way to find out is to join forces. Then it will be a battle of wills...and a triumph of hearts.
When I awoke, I was surrounded by two waiters and a naked lady on a cloud. I blinked and the lady turned out to be a painting of an angel on the ceiling. Was it a replica of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel? A pair of deep blue eyes peered into mine. The rich scent of Dark Water flooded my senses. I smiled. Then I remembered.
Charlie must have caught me when I fell because I was half lying on his lap instead of the hard floor. I lifted my head and struggled to move, but he held me in place. “Thank God. Stay still. Take your time. No need to get up.” Worry lines, as my mother liked to call them, creased his forehead.
“I’m okay.”
“You don’t look it… Did you eat breakfast?”
“Yes, of course.”
He grimaced. “Lemme guess. Grapefruit?”
“And a latte,” I said proudly.
He quirked a brow. “Oh well, that counts.”
I had the strangest urge to run my hand over his face and smooth away the wrinkles like the sheets on my bed in the morning. “I’m okay. Let me up.”
“All right, but take it slow. No sudden movements.”
I did as he asked, gradually raising onto my arms and getting up and into the chair Charlie helped me into.
The waiters hovered solicitously. One had a wet towel and the other, a glass of ice water. Charlie grasped the towel and pressed it on the back of my neck with one hand and grabbed the glass of water with the other. He held it to my lips. “Here, drink this.”
I obediently took a sip. “I’m okay. Really.”
How to tell the man that the pressure of his strong hand against my neck and the smell of his cologne was going to send me into a faint all over again? Thankfully, he took me at my word and removed the towel and set it next to my plate. He eyed me with suspicion. “Are you sure?”
I nodded, relieved when he finally walked back to his side of the table and sat. “God, what a self-centered ass I am. I’m sorry, Val. I could kick myself. I should have held my tongue.”
“No, I’m…I’m glad you told me.”
Charlie held one hand across his heart. Was it pounding as hard as mine? “Not another word until you finish your pasta. I can’t go through that again.”

EXCERPT #1

My shoulder hurts like hell but it’s worth the throbbing pain to finally hold her this close. I’ve been dying to do it since I found her in that filthy basement. I can’t explain it. The way she makes me feel inside.

Something has shifted.

Something that wasn’t there before.

I’d been born with an instinct to protect but I’d never had a feeling quite like this. The irrefutable need to not only protect this beautiful, lost creature but claiming her seems almost as peril. It’s what had me leaping in front of that bullet to save her. It’s what has me desperate to hold her right now. Because if I look at those supple lips for another fucking minute, I’m going to possess them in a way that already scares the shit out of me.

Selena pulls away to meet my gaze once more. “Oh, I’m sorry, did I hurt you?” she asks, dragging her fingers beneath her wet eyes.

“I’m good,” I tell her and she smiles shyly.
That tug in my chest grows stronger, my cock twitching with the curl of her lips. The greedy bastard hasn’t let up either. Not since she was bent over me in a pool of my own blood, begging for me to hang on. She thought I was dying, I thought I’d died and gone straight to heaven. Now she’s sitting here in front of me, looking broken and lost and the only thing I can think of is burying myself so deep inside of her nothing bad can ever touch her again.

“The nurse brought me some clean clothes earlier. Would it be okay if I took a shower?”

“Yeah, do whatever you need to do. I’m not going anywhere.”

She giggles and the sound trickles down my spine in a wave of heat. “I won’t be long,” she reassures me. “Do you need anything before I go?”

I shake my head and, almost reluctantly, she eases from the bed. She retrieves the small plastic bag on the couch then walks into the bathroom, shutting the door quietly behind her. When I hear the water switch on, I sink down farther into the bed, exhaling loudly.

Closing my eyes, I do my best not to think about Selena naked in the shower or the fact that she’ll be staying with me at the ranch. A knock sounds before Reid pokes his head inside.

“Hey, I was hoping you would be awake. How’re you feeling?”

“Sore as fuck.”

He walks closer to the bed, taking a seat next to me, looking tired and haggard.

“How’s Cassidy?”

He blows out a long breath, relaxing back in the chair. “She’s going to be okay. They’ll release her in a few days. Bodie came by to talk to her.”

Bodie is Cassidy’s brother and Reid’s former best friend. They thought he was murdered six years ago but turns out he’d been hiding out in Mexico, working for the DEA and infiltrating Del Marco’s cartel.

“How’d that go?”

“I’m still pissed but I gotta find a way to make peace with this shit, for Cassidy at least.”
“You’ll find a way.”

“When are they letting you out?”

“Sometime in the morning,” I answer.

“You call Mom and Dad?”

“Not yet. I’ll wait until I get home. If I call now she’ll be on the first flight out here.”

He nods. “She’ll be pissed when she finds out later.”

“I’ll deal with it. I got other shit to worry about. I’m taking her back to Pop’s with me.”

“You think that’s a good idea?” he asks, eyeing me.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”

“Well, for starters, she’s the drug lord’s stolen daughter.”

“Dead drug lord.”

“You really want to get technical right now? Not to mention, she’s only nineteen.”

“What does her age have to do with it?”

“Nothing. Listen, I just think you need to take a step back and look at this. You really have no idea the trauma she has been through and how much help she will need. Hell, you need all the help you can get right now, too. I just think you should tread carefully.”

“You think I don’t know that?” I snap, my patience wearing thin.

I see his point but I don’t care either. She needs help, and I want to be the one to give it to her.

Reid stands up. “I’m just looking out for you, brother. Let me know when they release you.”

I nod then he turns to leave.
Once the door shuts, the bathroom door opens. “Is everything okay?” she asks. Her dark hair hangs loosely around her shoulders, damp from the shower.

“Yeah, why?”

“I thought I heard someone in here and you sounded upset.”

“Reid stopped by, brother shit.”

She nods.

“I always wanted a brother or a sister,” she says sadly, sitting down in the chair next to me. “Is he your only sibling?”

I shake my head. “Hardly, I have five brothers and a pain in the ass sister.”

Selena beams, her smile making the room brighter. “I would love to hear about them.” She tucks her feet into the chair next to me, leaning in closer.

Goddamn, that voice, soft and sweet, her sexy Spanish accent curling around every word. Her eyes are locked firmly on mine, and I suck back a shot of air, clenching the sheet covering me. I know I should listen to my brother. I should be careful with her, not only because of what she’s been through but because she’s so young and vulnerable, and far too pure for the likes of me, but I can’t let her go.

And something in my chest tells me I never will.
